Springville K-8

Our Story:

Springville K-8 opened in the Fall of 2009 in the North Bethany area of the Beaverton School District. Since the school’s opening over thirteen years ago, Springville has developed a strong school culture and community built on relationships at every level. These relationships have fostered a deep love for the school, strong perseverance through difficult times, and a commitment to support one another in a common mission to educate all children at a high level. The strength of these relationships provides a foundation for the school going forward and an opportunity to look at continued growth and improvement.

Springville is undergoing a series of important transitions this year. First, the school will fully transition from a K-8 School to a K-5 School by the Fall of 2023. Therefore, we currently serve K-5 students and 8th grade students. This year we will graduate our last group of 8th graders. We will miss our middle school staff and students, and we also recognize the importance of this transition for our elementary and middle school students. Additionally, the school opened as an EL Education School and although we no longer actively partner with EL Education, we embrace the educational approach that promotes rigorous and engaging curriculum, inquiry-based teaching techniques, and a school culture that teaches compassion and citizenship.

As a result of these transitions as well as recognizing the effects of the pandemic on education over the last three years, we have engaged in deep conversation and worked to define our vision, mission, and values at Springville. This began with the staff in August 2021 and has continued this year as we engage students, families, and community members in conversation about the dreams and aspirations we hold for our children at Springville. As a staff, we have refined the following vision, mission, and values:

Our mission is to nurture curiosity and compassion as we honor and celebrate each individual’s learning journey.We do this by living and teaching our core values: Academic Inquiry, Building Strong Relationships, and Character Development.

Springville staff recognizes the importance of our collective impact in supporting the education and growth of all children in our school. As such, we are committed to becoming an anti-biased, anti-racist organization. This means an investment in personal learning and growth as educators as well as collectively examining systems and structures that may marginalize students and families. We appreciate the support of our families and community in doing this critical work.

We believe our work is every child, every day. Therefore, our school learning plan is built with “every child, every day” at the center. Our approach is multi-layered with equity, academic growth, and collaboration as the key areas of focus and the foundations for our goals this year.

Equity AREA OF FOCUS:

Schoolwide Systems to Support Students Below Grade Level

Equity Goal:

Springville staff will audit and reform systems and structures to deliver quality instruction to students below grade level.

Key Strategies:

Teachers will provide core instruction (Tier I) to students not at grade level in classrooms using district provided resources and differentiated strategies to support student goals.
Teachers will provide Tier 2 interventions determined in collaboration with grade level team, Academic Coach, ELD Team, and Special Education Team.
Academic Coach and Intervention Team will support Tier 3 interventions through a variety of structures and strategies using district supported strategies and resources as well as research based strategies.
Special Education Team will collaborate with general education staff on the most effective strategies and structures to support students with disabilities (ex: use of the support block and/or push in for SDI).
The Special Education Team will move to a four-day service model each week, which will allow for more frequent IEP meetings and more focus on progress towards goals.

Springville Staff will support each student to make at least one year’s growth in reading as measured by the IRLA.

Key Strategies:

Teachers will implement a workshop model of instruction (mini-lesson, conferring, small group instruction, read aloud), using district adopted literacy materials (Units of Study, Foundational Toolkits, etc.)
In K-2 and as needed in 3rd-5th, teachers will focus on foundational skills using newly adopted phonics and phonemic awareness curriculum.
Teachers will use IRLA and other formative assessment tools to track student growth and progress.
Classroom teachers will engage in training and calibration on using IRLA as a formative and summative assessment tool.
During independent reading time, teachers will confer and work with small groups of readers on skills and strategies to support individual student goals.
Classroom teachers and ELD teachers will work collaboratively to support a co-teaching/integrated ELD approach for English Learners.
Students in grades K-5 reading below grade level will receive additional strategic instruction from classroom teachers and in some cases, additional staff.

Grade Level Team Collaboration

Springville Staff will engage in grade level collaboration focused on student learning and teaching practice to grow our collective efficacy. We will do this through inquiry cycles. The collaboration will also include ELD teachers to support the co-teaching/integrated model and SEL Team to address social emotional learning.

Key Strategies:

Embedded collaboration time on Wed and Thurs mornings (45 minutes). Our SEL Team (Counselors, SSC, Social Worker, and Psychologist) will provide SEL lessons for students in the classroom during this time each week.
Collaborative agenda planning with grade level team, ELD teachers, Academic Coach, and administrator to work through inquiry cycles focused on a common challenge that is actionable and compelling.
Intentional focus on data/evidence and/or student work to drive inquiry cycle and focus on student learning.
Continued work on building strong teams and identifying qualities of healthy teams across the school.
